Illinois State Board Laser Rules
- General Supervision- Gingival curettage per ADA 1/19?
- Admin Code: Section 1220.240 Prescribed Duties of Dental Hygienists
- (225 ILCS 25/7.5) (Section scheduled to be repealed on Jan. 1, 2026)
- 7.5 Emerging scientific technology and applications. In the interest of public safety, the Board may review emerging scientific technology and applications and, when appropriate use and require the appropriate training needed for this technology by dental hygienists and assistants acting under the supervision of a dentist. “Emerging scientific technology” may include without limitation laser treatments and other treatments and potential treatments that, if used incorrectly, could have an adverse effect on patient health and safety. (source: p.a. 96-617, eff. 8-24-09)
- RDH can use laser but stay within scope of practice. Illinois requires appropriate training PRIOR to utilizing a laser and according to ANSI (American National Standards Institute – provides guidance on the safe use of lasers) recommends hands-on training for appropriate use.
- Reading the rules, we don’t believe RDH’s can initiate the tip for LAPT/LD but when we teach in this state, many RDH’s are doing this and have been for years. We suggest you talk to your supervising DDS and do what you feel comfortable with. If your supervising DDS wants you to initiate and you feel comfortable, then go with what your doctor says.
